- In Britain people imagined the sufferings of Russian people, and a number of schemes were set up to collect funds. The variety of these appeals, and lack of knowledge of Russian needs and conditions actually threatened to reduce their effectiveness, so a national scheme was arranged.
- The JWO began an Aid to Russia Fund in 1941, with Mrs Churchill as the chairman. Around £8 million was raised over the course of the war, in part from contributions from the Penny-a-Week Fund.
- The money raised helped pay for warm clothing and medical supplies. The JWO worked with the Trades Union Congress, the National Council of Labour and the Mineworkers Federation to supply these items.
- In addition to portable X-ray units, motor X-ray units and ambulances, the following items were sent: blankets, clothes, medicines, medical equipment, and First Aid kits.
