When World War II broke out in 1939, the British Red Cross and St. John Ambulance were ready for action. Thousands of our members provided essential care, training and support on the Home Front, from the Blitz to VJ Day.

These are their stories. They are all told in our volunteers’ own words.

Churchill

"I see the damage done by the enemy attacks; but I also see, side by side with the devastation and amid the ruins, quiet, confident, bright and smiling eyes. I see the spirit of an unconquerable people."

Winston Churchill April 12th, 1941

During World War Two the volunteers of the British Red Cross and St. John Ambulance worked side by side to care for humanity at its darkest hour. Now we have come together again to record the memories of these volunteers and to share them with you.
